Abstract

Enrichment media are necessary to increase the pathogenic organisms and restrict undesirable bacteria in sparsely infected specimens. It is especially needed to isolate enteric pathogens from chronic stages of infections. Salmonella-Shigella (SS) agar is one of the most widely distributed selective media in laboratories confering enteric bacteriology. Since this medium contains components which inhibit the growth of coliform and other concomitant bacteria, it is reasonable to suppose that the formula of SS agar is effective for the enrichment of enteric pathogens in feces.
SS broth was prepared by filtering out the agar in solubilized SS agar, and the growth and enriching effect of Salmonella and Shigella in this medium were compared with selenite and gram-negative (GN) broths. SS broth allowed the selective growth of S. typhimurium over Escherichia coli as selenite broth did. S. cholerae suis showed more prosperous growth than E. coli in SS broth at 6 hours of incubation, but was inhibited in selenite broth. Shigella flexneri 2a and Sh. sonnei I showed more marked growth than E. coli in SS broth at 6 and/or 24 hours, while were inhibited in selenite broth. Salmonella and Shigella strains tested were overgrown by E. coli in GN broth.
